The Ursula Keyes Trust is delighted to support wheelchair basketball player and community role model Joe Lewis with funding towards the purchase of his own specialist basketball wheelchair.

Joe, 27, was born with Cerebral Palsy and has been an active and dedicated member of his local wheelchair basketball club for many years. In addition to being a key player, he serves as the club’s Safeguarding Officer and is part of the coaching team, working as one of the club’s ‘Activators’ to support both junior and senior players.

Widely admired for his positivity, commitment, and leadership, Joe brings invaluable experience through his background in youth work. He not only helps players develop their sporting abilities but also supports their personal growth and confidence off the court. His contribution to the club community has made him a respected role model to athletes of all ages.

Until now, Joe has been using a club wheelchair that, although functional, is not designed specifically for his needs. This has affected his seating position, comfort, and mobility during training and matches. A custom-made wheelchair will provide the proper support and alignment he requires, enabling him to play, coach, and lead with greater ease and safety.

Joe had already taken the initiative to launch a JustGiving campaign and successfully raised £2,800 towards the cost of the new chair, following quotes from GK Wheelchairs and Sheen Parasports. The Trust is proud to contribute towards the remaining amount needed to cover the increased cost of the chair, along with essential spare parts such as tyres and inner tubes.

This donation recognises Joe’s outstanding dedication to his sport and his community. We are thrilled to help ensure he has the equipment he needs to continue inspiring others—on and off the court.
