Supporting Play, Growth, and Wellbeing: Ursula Keyes Trust Helps Bring New Playground Equipment to Mickle Trafford Village School

The Ursula Keyes Trust is proud to have supported the Mickle Trafford Village School & Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA) in their recent Playground Development Project by contributing to the cost of new play equipment and the safe removal of condemned structures.

Mickle Trafford Village School, with its long-standing history dating back to 1909, provides a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for children aged 4 to 11. While the school itself is well-regarded—most recently receiving a “Good” rating in all areas from Ofsted in May 2023—it faced a significant challenge when its existing playground equipment was condemned due to age and deterioration.

Play is a vital part of childhood development, but unfortunately, the cost of play equipment falls outside the scope of standard school funding. Recognising the importance of this project, the school’s PTA, an active and dedicated registered charity, began fundraising to replace the condemned equipment. Through a variety of community events such as fairs, discos, and cake sales, they raised a substantial portion of the required funds. However, they needed additional support to reach their target.

That’s where the Ursula Keyes Trust was able to help.

Thanks to our contribution, the PTA can now move forward with the installation of carefully selected, child-approved equipment. The new playground will feature:

  • Single Balance Beam on Tyres
  • Mini Log Bridge
  • Rope Traverse
  • Parallel Ropes
  • Set of 3 Zig Zag Balance Beams

These additions are designed to provide physical challenge, support coordination and strength development, and promote a healthy lifestyle through regular movement.

The benefits of quality outdoor play equipment go far beyond physical health. Playgrounds are critical spaces for social interaction, emotional growth, creativity, and even improved academic performance. As the school’s application notes, outdoor play fosters independence, cognitive development, and contributes to a more positive school culture.

We are pleased that our support helped bridge the gap in funding so that the children at Mickle Trafford Village School won’t have to wait any longer to enjoy these new resources. This project exemplifies the kind of impactful, community-driven work that the Ursula Keyes Trust is committed to supporting.

We commend the PTA for their tireless fundraising efforts and the school for their clear commitment to their students’ holistic development.

Together, we’ve helped create a space where children can thrive—not just in their studies, but in life.
